Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) seeks Host sites for the 2019-2020 Internship Award

The VRAF is seeking host sites for the internship; if you are interested in hosting an intern at no cost to your institution, please read the information below.

We are very grateful to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation for so generously supporting our past Internship Award recipients. Contingent upon this year’s funding from Kress, we will offer our seventh internship in 2019-2020. Click here to read about the 2018-2019 VRAF Internship Award Recipient, Adelaide McComb.

The award grants $3,000 to support an internship in archives, libraries, museums, visual resources collections, or other appropriate settings. It also provides a professional development account of $1,000 to be used for attending conferences or training events, including the VRA Annual Conference and/or Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management (SEI).

The student will provide 200 hours of service over the course of their internship. In order to be eligible for the internship, the student must have completed at least ten credits of graduate coursework in Library/Information Science, Art History, Architecture or Architectural History, Visual or Studio Art, Museum Studies, or other applicable fields of study.

Although this internship is available to non-US residents, the work must take place at an institution within the USA. While Canadian institutions are not eligible to host a VRAF intern, such internships might be of interest to any number of people who are seeking VR-related internships and can be included in our list of available opportunities.

If you and your institution are interested in hosting a student during the Fall, Winter, or Spring of the 2019-2020 academic year, please fill out the VRAF Host Institution Google Form.

With this information, a list of potential internship sites will be compiled and added to the Visual Resources Emerging Professionals and Students (VREPS) website to help student applicants find an internship in their geographical area.

Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) announces 2019 Project Grant Recipient

 

KirklandGraphicCostumeCoreThe Board of Directors of the Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) is pleased to present the 2019 VRAF Project Grant in the amount of $3000 to Arden Kirkland, creator of the CostumeCore Toolkit, and Adjunct Professor at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY.

The CostumeCore Toolkit project will provide a toolkit to users, in order to streamline the process of setting up standards-based, interoperable metadata for collections related to the study of historic clothing. The VRAF Project Grant will allow Ms. Kirkland to update current templates in CSV/Excel formats, create plug-ins for Omeka S, templates and vocabulary for JSTOR Forum, and provide RDF extensions of VRA Core, incorporate AAT/EFT Uniform Resource Identifiers in CostumeCore, and create plugins and modules to support micro-thesauri for linked data. The CostumeCore Toolkit is currently utilized at Smith College and Vassar College, and will continue to be built-out with CostumeCore Toolkit user testing with those Colleges, Visual Resources Association members, and Costume Society of America members input and feedback. The project will allow the CC Toolkit to be available to the public under a Creative Commons BY- SA license.

In accordance with its mission to support broad access to visual information, the VRAF is pleased to support a project that extends metadata schemas and standards, and dissemination of templates about visual culture into expanded fields of inquiry.

2019 VRA Foundation Project Grant: Call for Applications

Call for Project Grant Applications Open! Deadline Extended to May 10, 2019, 11:59PM PST

The purpose of the VRA Foundation’s Project Grant is to provide support for projects in the field of visual resources and image management.  One grant is available in the spring 2019 cycle with up to $3,000 to be awarded.  The funds may be used for stand-alone projects, pilots or start-up financing for larger projects, or for a component of a larger project.  Collaborative projects and those proposed by groups, whether or not affiliated with an organization or institution, are encouraged.  Of particular interest are innovative projects with results that can have a broad impact and be shared with the global community.  Categories to be considered for funding would include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following:

  • Metadata for Visual Media
  • Visual Media Cataloguing Standards
  • Visual Media Data Standards
  • Digitization Projects of Special or Unique Collections (Educational Institutions, Libraries, Museums)
  • Visual Literacy
  • Technology Development for Visual Media Management and Pedagogy
  • Intellectual Property Rights

The project must be completed within one year from the time the grant is formally accepted. The grant will be disbursed in two increments: $1500 at the start of the granting period, and $1500 pending the submission of a mid-project progress report. A final report, including a financial statement, on how the funds contributed to the project is due within one month of the project’s completion. Failure to complete the proposed project may result in the grantee returning the funds.

The VRA Foundation has United States Internal Revenue Service status as a 501c3 non-profit entity. All elements of a proposed project must be performed within the legal parameters of United States local, regional, and federal government requirements. International applications are welcome from institutions or individuals provided applicant institutions have the equivalent of US non-profit status and applicant individuals have a similar non-profit, educational purpose.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants should be working in the field of visual resources and image management, and may include retirees, those currently unemployed, or students.
  • Membership in the Visual Resources Association is not required.
  • Other applications for funding for the same project must be disclosed.
  • Former recipients of the grant are not eligible for a period of two years following their most recent award.

Grant monies may be used for:

  • Salaries and labor costs
  • Transportation costs
  • Cost of Materials (grants generally do not fund the purchase of office and other/related equipment)
  • Other appropriate expenses (as approved by VRAF)

Grant monies may not be used to cover indirect costs at institutions

The Board of Directors of the Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) is pleased to present the winter 2019 VRAF Professional Development Grant in the amount of $1000 to Dr. Claudy Op den Kamp, Senior Lecturer in Film at the Faculty Member Centre for Intellectual Property Policy & Management, Bournemouth University.

Claudy Op den Kamp, plans on utilizing the funds to attend the 2019 Visual Resources Association (VRA) National Conference, which will be in Los Angeles, California from March 26-29th. Op den Kamp will be a co-presenter at a session titled, Special Topics in Intellectual Property Rights: Motion Pictures, Archival Footage, and Film in Pedagogy. She will be discussing Intellectual Property Rights interdisciplinary issues in the talk and from her new book, A History of Intellectual Property in 50 Objects (Cambridge University Press, May 2019) in which she co-edited, designed, researched images and gained image clearances for the publication. The information in this professional development journey is leading her to create a new publication “Object 51: Copyright, Digital Cultural Heritage and Academic Publishing,” which regards the process and production of A History of Intellectual Property in 50 Objects. Information for the second publication will be gathered at the VRA LA 2019 Conference with the intent to contribute to the wider cultural heritage community.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

This day-long workshop will provide you with the background and tools to effectively organize, catalogue, and distribute your institution’s digital assets by introducing you to the core concepts of managing digital content. Participants will receive an overview of metadata standards, as well as how to manage, share, and publish digital content.

Topics covered will include:

  • Best practices for metadata cataloging, crosswalks and controlled vocabularies; Linked Open Data (LOD), Resource Description Format (RDF), International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) and other preservation metadata and authoritative taxonomies.
  • Embedded metadata and associated embedding tools as related to the easy transfer of data
  • Workflows for successfully managing collaborative digital projects, including intellectual property and rights assessments, content distribution, and long-term archival storage.
  • Successful project management strategies and tools for team collaboration.
  • Content management systems and digital delivery platforms, for a variety of types of digital content (online collections, library & archival content, scholarly publications etc)
  • Assessing rights and reproductions, and other copyright considerations that may impact digital distribution.

INSTRUCTOR:

Shyam Oberoi is the Chief Digital Officer for the Royal Ontario Museum where he oversees the Museum’s digital and technology strategy.  Before coming to the ROM, he was the Director of Technology and Digital Media at the Dallas Museum of Art, where he led the Museum’s digital and technical initiatives with responsibility for media creation, gallery interactives, technical services and mobile experiences. Among his successes was a multi-year project to comprehensively digitize every object in the DMA’s collection, and publish the entire collection online with extended scholarly content.  Previously, Shyam spent nearly a decade at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where he oversaw a team responsible for the archiving, cataloging, licensing and digital content distribution for the museum’s 2 million works of art. He is frequent presenter at museum and technology conferences including SXSW, American Alliance of Museums, Museum Computer Network (MCN), and has led a number of cross-institutional collaborative technology projects, including “Building for Engagement: Participation at Scale in Art Museums” funded by a National Leadership Grant from the IMLS.  He has a B.A. in Computer Science from Manhattan College, and an M.A. in English from New York University.

While every attempt will be made to hold the workshop on April 26, 2019, if inclement weather prevents either the instructor or a large number of participants from attending, the workshop will be rescheduled. Refunds of the registration fee will only be issued if you are unable to attend the workshop on the rescheduled date. The VRAF is not responsible for refunding any previously made travel or lodging arrangements.

The Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the VRAF Professional Development Grant program. This program offers two $1000 grants yearly. This grant can be used to support conference participation, enroll in a workshop, for an online education opportunity, or for research activities. Purpose:

The purpose of the VRAF Professional Development grant is to support professional development in the field of visual resources and cultural heritage information management. The grant can be used to participate in a professional development opportunity of the grantee’s choosing (such as a conference, symposium, workshop, online education), or to enroll in relevant research activities (such as hands-on field work or a site visit for scholarly purposes). Priority will be given to applications that include participation at a conference (giving a paper, teaching a workshop, chairing a committee, etc.); research that shows promise to lead to publication or contributes to the visual resources and cultural heritage information management community; or to applications that can demonstrate that the receiving the opportunity will have a broader benefit to an institution or region. Please note that recipients of the award are required to submit a report outlining how the award contributed to his or her professional development within 30 days following the event.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants should have a professional interest in visual resources and cultural heritage information management, and may include retirees, the currently unemployed, or students seeking educational and training opportunities in support of broad access to cultural information.
  • Membership in the Visual Resources Association is not required.
  • Statements of financial need will be strongly considered.

Acceptable Uses of Award Money:

  • Transportation costs to and from the event venue
  • Registration fees or tuition
  • Required course materials (e.g., work books, DVDs)
  • Lodging
  • Meals – including meals in transit to and from the educational event
  • Research expenses

Grant monies may not be used to cover indirect costs (a percentage of grant money taken by the grantee’s institution to cover perceived overhead)

Application Criteria:

  • A goals statement outlining the opportunity, how it will benefit your work, and any potential contributions this opportunity may allow you to make beyond your own professional development.
  • A comprehensive budget and breakdown of your proposed travel, lodging, meal, and other expenses. When costs are estimated, please explain (e.g., “roundtrip airfare on United as determined via Expedia search”; my lodging costs reflect an estimate for a shared room). If your institution requires you to use a specific airline, or has set a corporate airfare rate, please note this in the comments section. Be as clear and complete as possible about other funding support you will receive or are applying for, such as from your home institution, or other grants and awards.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Are you a beginning Omeka user who would like to know more about its capabilities and possible uses? This workshop will explore both the Omeka.net (free, remote hosted) and the Omeka.org (free, to install on your own server) versions, and the newest product, Omeka S (a way to manage many collections under one admin interface). Plug-ins, mapping and loading data, and customization will be covered. There will be time at the end to brainstorm about workflow scenarios and case uses of Omeka by visual resources professionals, as well as by faculty and students. Participants should bring their own laptops if they want to participate in the hands-on portion of the workshop.

INSTRUCTOR

Susan Jane Williams is a 28-year member of the Visual Resources Association and served as its Vice President in 1999 and 2000. Following a career as a botanical illustrator, Williams graduated from Ohio State University with an MA in Art History and began working as a Slide and Media Librarian at Rochester Institute of Technology in 1990. Because Rochester is the home of Kodak, she was involved in some early and innovative digitization projects. Hired by Yale University, she was charged with building their first digital teaching collection. She won the DeLaurier Award from VRA in 2007 for developing a cataloging database tool, VCat, which utilizes VRA Core 4 and CCO and is capable of Core 4 XML, and now, RDF with LOD output. She has worked as an independent cataloger and consultant since 2007, serving the academic and commercial image vendor communities.
